Pregnancy-safe

Nobody checks this claim. Here's what to look for instead.

No authority approves the words "pregnancy-safe." A brand decides to print them. That's it.

So read the ingredients yourself. It's easier than it sounds.

Stop using

  • Retinol and anything like it — retinal, retinyl palmitate, tretinoin, adapalene
  • Hydroquinone
  • Salicylic acid over 2% if you leave it on. In a face wash you rinse off, 2% is usually fine
  • Oxybenzone in sunscreen
  • Strong essential oils

Used retinol before you found out? Don't panic. Stop now and mention it to your doctor.

Keep using

Azelaic acid. Niacinamide. Vitamin C. Hyaluronic acid. Glycerin. Ceramides. Peptides. Mineral sunscreen.

Cleanser, serum, moisturiser, sunscreen — most routines barely change.

Breaking out?

Common in pregnancy, usually worst around month four to six.

Use azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide, a 2% salicylic face wash, or pimple patches. Azelaic acid is the best one — it handles both spots and dark marks.

Dark patches on your face?

That's melasma. Sun makes it worse.

Mineral sunscreen every day is the most important thing you can do. Reapply every two hours outside. Add vitamin C and azelaic acid. Leave anything stronger until after the baby.

Checking a product

  1. Ignore the front of the box
  2. Read the ingredient list
  3. Check the percentage on any active
  4. Can't tell? Ask the seller before you buy

One last thing

We sell skincare, we're not doctors. Ask yours about anything prescription or anything you're unsure of.
