Salicylic Acid (BHA)

the exfoliating acid that gets inside pores - the single most useful active for oily, congested, blackhead-prone skin.

What it actually does: salicylic acid is oil-soluble, so instead of working only on the surface like AHAs, it dissolves into pores and clears the plug of oil and dead skin from the inside. It’s also mildly anti-inflammatory, which is why it calms angry breakouts rather than aggravating them.

Who it’s for: oily skin, blackheads, whiteheads, texture, mild acne. In our climate: where six months of the year your face is producing oil like it’s paid to, this is arguably the most locally relevant active there is.

How to use it: 0.5–2% (2% is the standard). Start twice a week, build to alternate nights or daily as tolerated. Cleanser versions are gentler; leave-on serums work harder.

Plays well with: niacinamide (great pairing for oily skin). Keep apart from: retinoids and other acids at first - stagger them on different nights until your skin proves it can handle more.

Honest expectations: blackheads and congestion improve in two to four weeks. Mild acne, four to eight. Moderate-to-severe acne needs a dermatologist, not a serum - we’ll say that every time.
