This is the article we’d write even if it cost us followers.
Two separate issues, both worth saying plainly:
1. The safety issue. Pakistan’s unregulated whitening cream market has a documented contamination problem: independent testing (including by university researchers and PCSIR labs) has repeatedly found mercury far above safe limits in popular fairness creams, and many “miracle” creams are unlabelled mixes containing potent steroids, the same betamethasone in Betnovate, sold as a beauty product. Mercury accumulates in the body and damages skin, kidneys, and the nervous system. Steroid creams thin skin, cause rebound redness, permanent visible vessels, and steroid-dependent skin that erupts when you stop. These are among the most harmful products sold in Pakistani beauty, full stop.
How to spot the danger signs: no INCI list; results in days; skin that gets dramatically lighter fast then reacts violently to sun or stopping; a strong metallic or chemical smell; no manufacturer address. A real brightening product fades marks over months. A cream that lightens your whole face in two weeks is doing chemistry no honest ingredient can do.
2. The other issue. BYOUT sells brightening products: ingredients that fade dark marks and even out tone. We do not sell, and will not stock, products whose promise is changing your skin’s actual colour. We’re aware that’s a line some of the market doesn’t draw. We’re drawing it anyway. Your skin tone was never the problem; the mark left by that one breakout in 2024, sure, we can help with that.
(This page is safety information, not medical advice. If you’ve used a cream you suspect contained steroids or mercury, a dermatologist can help: rebound effects are treatable and doctors have seen it many times before.)
The BYOUT Library is educational content, not personalised medical advice. For persistent or severe skin concerns, a dermatologist beats any article, including ours.
