How to layer: the order of operations

The rule that resolves 90% of confusion: thinnest to thickest. Water-like things first, creams later, oils and sunscreen last.

Morning:

  1. Cleanse (or rinse)
  2. Treatment serum (vitamin C / niacinamide)
  3. Moisturiser
  4. Sunscreen: always last, always. Nothing goes on top except makeup.

Night:

  1. Cleanse (double cleanse if sunscreen/makeup)
  2. Active (retinoid OR acid: one per night)
  3. Moisturiser
  4. Optional: facial oil / occlusive last

Waiting between layers: thirty seconds to a minute so things don’t pill. The “wait 20 minutes between steps” rule is mostly folklore, the exception being right after cleansing before an acid, if you’re sensitive.

The one-active-per-night principle: your skin does not award points for effort. Retinoid Monday, acid Thursday, moisturiser-only Sunday is a sophisticated routine, not a lazy one.
