How to build a routine from scratch

The whole thing in one sentence: cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen: everything else is optional.

The core three:

1. Cleanser. Once at night, non-negotiable (the day’s sunscreen, oil, and smog come off). Morning is optional: water or a light cleanse. Rule: your face should feel clean, not tight. Tight \= too harsh.

2. Moisturiser. Gel or gel-cream for oily skin, cream for dry, and yes, oily skin still needs it: skip it and your skin often produces more oil to compensate.

3. Sunscreen. Every morning. This is the anti-ageing product, the anti-pigmentation product, and the reason the expensive serums work. If your budget covers exactly one “extra” product, it’s this. UV comes through clouds and car windows; December counts.

Then, only if you have a specific concern, add ONE active:

  • Oily / congested → salicylic acid
  • Dark marks → niacinamide or alpha arbutin
  • Dullness / texture → lactic acid
  • Lines / long-game → retinol (nights)

Run it for a month before judging. Add nothing new for three weeks after. A five-product routine done daily beats a twelve-product routine done enthusiastically for nine days.

What you don’t need: toner (optional, mostly texture preference), essence (a lighter serum with better branding), separate eye cream (usually your moisturiser in a smaller, pricier jar), a different cleanser for morning and night. Skincare has more steps for sale than your skin has uses for.
