IFRA: fragrance safety

IFRA (International Fragrance Association) publishes safety standards for fragrance ingredients, maximum safe concentrations, banned materials, restricted uses. Perfumers and cosmetic manufacturers worldwide formulate against IFRA standards.

What “IFRA compliant” means: the fragrance in the product stays within internationally agreed safety limits for skin contact. Relevant for perfumes obviously, but also for anything scented that sits on your skin.

What it doesn’t mean: IFRA compliance doesn’t mean a fragrance won’t irritate your skin specifically. Fragrance remains one of the most common causes of cosmetic skin reactions even at compliant levels. If your skin is reactive, “fragrance-free” beats “IFRA compliant.”
